The Nivegy Valley is a hidden gem on the northern shore, located south of Nagyv\u00e1zsony towards Lake Balaton. This area between the K\u00e1li and P\u00e9csely basins comprises five small villages: Balatoncsics\u00f3, \u00d3budav\u00e1r, Szentantalfa, Szentjakabfa, and Tagyon.<\/strong><\/p>\n

History<\/h4>\n

According to legends, the valley’s history dates back to the Hungarian conquest. Today, \u00d3budav\u00e1r is named after Buda, a warrior who settled there. The founding of three other villages in the valley is attributed to his sons: Istv\u00e1n (Csicsa) founded Balatoncsics\u00f3, Jakab founded Szentjakabfa, and Antal founded Szentantalfa. From the 12th century, the villages are mentioned in documents. Only the church ruins preserve the memory of \u00c1rp\u00e1d-era relics and the original village locations. Among these, the St. Bal\u00e1zs Church Ruin<\/a>, built in the 12th-13th centuries, stand out. Hundreds gather there annually on the first weekend of February for an open-air mass celebrating the patron saint’s feast day.<\/p>\n

The valley was a popular settlement area even in Roman times, and they also cultivated grapes here.<\/p>\n

Present Day<\/h4>\n

Today, the Nivegy Valley boasts over 500 hectares of cultivated vineyards. It is the largest contiguous wine region in the Balatonf\u00fcred-Csopak wine region and the Balaton Highlands. The area’s location, volcanic soil, and proximity to Lake Balaton provide an excellent environment for white grape varieties. The valley’s most significant varieties, flagship wines, are Juhfark and Olaszrizling. Local wineries’ Rieslings perform well every year in the BalatonBor<\/a> and HegyBor competitions. Due to varying weather and unique terroir, a few red grape varieties are also now found in the region. The wineries<\/a> welcome wine lovers with wine tastings and tasting platter.<\/p>\n

As a result of its development, the valley’s culinary offerings are continually expanding alongside its wines and wine tourism. Culinary enthusiasts can now choose from several restaurants<\/a>, all of which feature local ingredients. The individual vineyards and villages offer various accommodation<\/a> options for visitors. The entire region provides a true retreat for those who wish to enjoy the tranquility of nature and escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.<\/p>\n

This peaceful environment, excellent wines, and local products together strengthen the valley’s harmony. The number of primary producers<\/a> in the Nivegy Valley is outstanding nationwide. The products they produce are high-value-added and largely handmade. A wide range of quality artisan goods is available, from processed products to fine art pieces.<\/p>\n

Numerous local programs and events<\/a> also enliven the valley’s life, such as weekend markets, music evenings, open cellar programs, and tours.
